7-Zip is a popular open source file extraction and compression program. It works with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP. It is easy to use, works with Windows Shell, supports encryption, and is completely free for personal and commercial use. I’ve used many compression programs and 7-Zip is one of the better picks. Because of its Windows Explorer context menu integration, it is one of the easiest programs to use. With a simple right-click, you can quickly extract or create an archive.
7-zip has a build in browser for locating, extracting and creating archives. It works exactly the same as Windows Explorer, therefor it is my preference to simply use Windows Explorer and utilize 7-Zip’s Windows Shell integration when creating and extracting archives. Additionally, you can create self-extracting compressed archives for sending to others without having to worry about what software they have or have not installed.
Supported Compression Formats in 7-Zip
Looking to save space, secure data, or just back up your important data? 7-Zip is the tool to use. It is free, fast, tiny and support all the important compression and decompression formats.
In conclusion, 7-Zip is not the best archiving program available, but between the free ones, it belongs in the top 3. It is lightweight, but also powerful. Compression rates (size produced by a data compression algorithm) in the 7-Zip’s native format (7z) are particularly impressive.
